ABSTRACT
The strength of anH-shaped steel beam column is decided by an in-plane elastic limit or a lateral
torsional buckling. The present design formulas in a lot of countries are shown by one design
formula including an in-plane elastic limit and a lateral torsional buckling. The strength obtained
by using the present design formula of steel beam-columns was compared with the experiment
value, the design formula gave conservative value in some part. The purposes of this study are;
(1) to propose the design formula which evaluates effectually the cause of collapse mode of Hshaped
steel beam column, (2) to study the proposed design formula by comparing strengths
calculated by using the proposed design formulawith a strength calculated by using the present
design formula. The difference between the proposed design formula and present design formula
is smallwhen the slenderness ratio is small. The proposed formula evaluates strength larger than
that obtained by using the present formulawhen the slenderness ratio is large.
