Yield Capacity Curve of a Steel Channel Section

ABSTRACT
The yield capacity curve of a steel channel section with a linear stress/strain distribution can be
solved using the analytical approach illustrated in the author’s two books on the subject. The
variables considered are the dimensions of the channel section, the position of the capacity axis
and the yield stress of thematerial. The free body diagramisdrawn to indicate these variables and
the line equations to define the sides of the channel section and the linear stress/strain function.
The required equations are derived using only basicmathematics. Fromthese equations the yield
capacity curvewhich encompasses all cases of loading on the section is developed. This analytical
procedure thus provides a solution without using the current standard interaction formula for
biaxial bending. The numerical example showed that the analyticalmethod of solution yields the
most accurate and realistic resultwhen predicting the true capacity of a channel section.
