ABSTRACT

If proper bracing is not provided during construction, large diameter steel plate storage tanks may experience severe damage when subjected to gusting wind loads. One such case is presented in this paper, involving a 2,760 cubic-meter, open-ended steel plate tank that experienced localized buckling under a severe straight line wind conditions. Tank wall failure mode simulation, using FEA methods incorporating non-linear material behavior and tank natural response frequencies, are presented. The tank modal responses are then compared to estimated forcing functions based on recorded wind gust pressures and period forming the basis for ASCE, ASME, and API Code design recommendations.

Keywords: Finite element analysis (FEA), Resonance frequency, Modal participation factor.
