ABSTRACT

Negotiation, as an alternative dispute resolution method, is widely adopted to resolve dispute at its early stage. However, ineffective negotiation affects the success of the construction dispute negotiation. Influences of uncertainty contribute a major part of the ineffectiveness of a negotiation. This paper aims at identifying the potential root-causes of uncertainty in construction dispute negotiation. Questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from construction professionals in Hong Kong. With the returned 76 questionnaires, relative importance indices of different root causes of uncertainty were calculated. The results indicated that time pressure and intact relationship are the most important items among the others.
