ABSTRACT
Overlapping traditionally sequential activities is becoming a requirement for fast-tracking
complex construction projects. The amount, timing, and nature of the information exchanged
between pairs of activities determine the degree to which the pair of activities may be overlapped.
This paper presents the first step in a proposed methodology for scheduling fast-track
construction project. This step consists of capturing and quantifying the exchange of dependency
information between pairs of project activities. Collecting this information is essential
in building the shortest possible project schedule while taking into consideration dependency
information. The proposed methodology is applied on a real-world case study—amulti-billion
dollar educational facility in the Arabian Gulf. The project is fast-tracked by nature as illustrated
by its design phase which was executed in 9.5 months. Several factors contributed to the design
team’s success in meeting the schedule objectives. These include setting clear objectives from
the owner’s side, ensuring good communication between the consultant and the contractor,
and recognizing construction priorities and incorporating them into the dependencies.
