ABSTRACT

An asymptotic analysis is employed to estimate the travel distances of a firebrand and a droplet through the centerline of a plume. The results for the firebrand lofting and horizontal propagation owing to wind are compared with previous numerical solutions. Agreement is good, except for the maximum distance traveled horizontally. The results from the motion of the droplets towards the fuel surface provide insights for the effectiveness of sprinklers in high ceiling areas.

Keywords: Fire plumes, Firebrand propagation, Sprinkler droplet penetration.
