ABSTRACT

This paper presents some fire and explosion hazards in the marine industry with particular focus on the growing hazards due to the increase in containerised shipping and the impact of environmental legislation. Concerns about health and the environment have resulted in changes to bulk and containerised cargoes and fire fighting methods.

This paper presents some generic case studies of self heating, thermal runaway, misdeclared and unstable cargoes and poor practice which have resulted in major vessel damage and cargo losses.

Keywords: Shipping fire, Container, Rechargeable batteries.
