During the last fifteen years or so, the School of Professional and Continuing Education at The University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE) has grown and developed into a very large and reputable institution, providing continuing education programmes to more than 100,000 students every year in Hong Kong and the region. This paper traces this development and examines the operating model of HKU SPACE. After introducing HKU and HKU SPACE, the paper describes the features and benefits of incorporating HKU SPACE as a non-profit company. Other key success factors concerning HKU SPACE are then described. These include our learner-centred philosophy in continuing education, sharing educational resources, our efforts in developing a quality assurance system appropriate for continuing education and also our work on research in continuing education and lifelong learning.
