Issues for engineering education are posed by the challenges to be faced in the Twenty First Century. National economic effectiveness is reviewed in the context of academic activity. Reflecting this in engineering education, a failure to give appropriate recognition to the whole-life learning needs of engineers has generated inappropriate pressures on initial engineering education. Examples are given of unusual undergraduate activities and of some of the CPD courses.
