Abstract
Innovation is the economic engine that drives business organizations in their endless journey of sustaining competitive advantage. This leads to greater market growth and profitability for the organizations. A tangible outcome of the innovation process is the development of new products and services for the chosen market segments. While the need for innovation remains forever, the context for the innovation does change from time to time. One of the current context for innovation is the issue of sustainability. However, the innovation and the new product development practices in vogue now seem to predominantly focus on running “the consumption engine”.
This talk will focus on this aspect and highlight the need for new perspectives required in the innovation process. Firstly the notion of sustainability will be introduced by drawing alternative perspectives from the Ancient Indian Wisdom. Further, a framework for business model innovation will be used to identify some of the issues to be addressed in the innovation process in an emerging era of creating sustainable solutions for the society.
