ABSTRACT

This empirical research discusses on human factor aspects of express bus accidents in Malaysia. Seventy four items were acknowledged through previous research that are related to the causes of accidents. Those items were divided into four main aspects of human factors; namely, human errors, mechanical, environment and management. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to identify and further grouped the variables divided into several constructs of factors. A total of 60 items are finalised into 14 constructs, which were still under the four main human factor aspects. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) will later be used to validate the 14 factors structure of human factor of express bus accidents. The results suggest mechanical factor as the critical contributor of express bus accidents in Malaysia. This is followed by management, human error and environment. Other suggestions regarding the factors and causes, along with some ways to reduce the rate of express bus accidents were discussed.

Keywords: Express bus, Accidents, Human factor, Factor analysis
