<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>There are a number of post offices situated in our state. But only few are centralized and all the letters are distributed by that center. Hence it is a difficult task for the workers to sort huge number of letters. Automatic sorting machines are not developed in all the post offices. Hence workers have to sort the letters manually. Because of limited workers, the work load increases. The presence of a wax heater (which is necessary to seal huge letter bags) produces foul smell which might be injurious to health as well. Because of small/old buildings all things are situated in a single room. Hence during sorting of postal letters workers need to inhale the polluted air, resulting in various health issues.</p><p>  This project emphasizes on the digital image processing and the sorting procedure to sort the postal letter based on the extraction and separation of the PINCODE. PINCODE is a 6 digit unique number for every city. Basic principle of the project is feature extraction of PINCODE, based on the principal component analysis in digital image processing.  </p><p><italic>Keywords: </italic>Image processing, Pincode extraction, Sorting. </p>
