Due to the lack of a unique propagation velocity and an understanding of the ignition and combustion mechanisms within the structure, a detonation wave can no longer be defined unambiguously. Thus, it is not meaningful to attempt to establish the occurrence of a detonation event nor to seek the cause of the detonation initiation (e.g. DDT) in an accidental explosion. It appears more appropriate to simply focus the investigation on determining the existence of the conditions for rapid flame acceleration to high turbulent deflagration speeds in order to estimate blast overpressures that could be generated.
