This paper describes the application of vibro stone columns for an offshore rig fabrication yard attached to Bien Dong 1 project in Vung Tau, Vietnam. Petro Vietnam proposed to expand their fabrication facility to support crane loads up to 500 kPa. The presence of soft soils necessitated that the ground be treated to ensure adequate bearing capacity and to minimize long term settlement. Various options were initially considered by the client, including piling, cement soil mixing and soil replacement (plus geotextile reinforcement). Eventually, Vibro stone column was chosen as the method that was able to meet the geotechnical requirements, budget and the tight construction time frame. The design concept of the Vibro stone column scheme, construction procedure, quality control measures and post-construction monitoring data are presented herein. The vibro stone column strengthened platform has performed satisfactorily and the facility is currently in operation.
