Vibro compaction is a ground improvement method to densify granular soils such as loose sands and gravels. Jurong Island is an artificial island housing many global oil and petrochemical facilities. It is formed by reclamation over seven small islands. Due to the nature of the reclamation ground in Jurong Island, vibro compaction has been used extensively to improve the granular soils for highways, slope revetments, storage tanks and refinery applications. This paper presents the performance of foundations for chemical plant structures, founded on vibro compacted sand in Jurong Island. Aspects like basic principle, execution, QA/QC works will be highlighted in this paper. It is followed by the discussion of a case history and actual settlement performance of a moderately loaded chemical plant structure, founded on vibro compacted sand.
