ABSTRACT
Hong Kong has the world record of tall buildings. With compact layout of tall
buildings throughout the urban area, Hong Kong has a low carbon footprint in terms
of per capita transportation energy. However, the increasing tall buildings in form of
wall effect have caused great environmental concern in Hong Kong. Based on a
consultancy study about building design that supports sustainable urban living space
in Hong Kong, the author will share how building design guidelines may help foster
a quality and sustainable environment in Hong Kong. The design guidelines address
the issue of urban heat island effect, air ventilation and quality of pedestrian
environment in the unique context of Hong Kong. Recommendations include
building permeability ratio, green coverage, and podium setback from very narrow
street canyon.
