ABSTRACT

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) provides public rental housing for the low income families, which account for about 30% of the population of Hong Kong. So far we have produced a stock close to 700,000 flats, while about 100,000 units are at design and construction stage. As a public service provider, we care for the people and the environment. We strive for sustainability in planning, design, construction and management of our public housing development by engaging relevant stakeholders at different points in time.

In every project, we go through detailed analysis of the environmental and socio-economic structure pertinent to the site. We proactively engage community leaders and members to develop a design that well meet the public aspirations for sustainable living. Our objective is to create a harmonious living environment.

To mitigate the impact of the climate change due to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, HKHA has embarked on a number of green initiatives, including both vertical and horizontal greening for building roof and covered walkway at open space, use of green materials scrutinized by Life Cycle Analysis & Life Cycle Costing (LCA & LCC) assessment, modularization of flat designs to allow extensive prefabrication and precast construction, piloting use of renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic and wind-powered lighting installations, new refuse handling system and the installation of de-odourizers at refuse collection points for better environmental hygiene, and heritage preservation for local cultural sustainability.

Keywords: Healthy living, Sustainable community.
