ABSTRACT

As the use of buckling-restrained braces (BRB) has increased in tall buildings, it is imperative to understand well the mechanical characteristics of BRBs. As the true systems are of fractional order (FO), an FO differential equation is introduced to describe the mechanical properties of BRB. The nonlinear characteristics of BRB are considered at the same time. First, the transfer function for reflecting the displacement responses is deduced. Second, the filter approximation algorithm by Outalop is proposed to deal with the FO differential. Then the model is reduced from the integer-order transfer function of higher order. In addition, different orders of FO differential are investigated in order to confirm the proper order. Finally, to illustrate the feasibility of the method proposed above, it is applied to a 20-storey third generation benchmark building with BRBs.
