ABSTRACT

Because of the complicated structural behaviour and involved cracking reasons, cracking of transfer beam always become intricate problems in tall building engineering. In this paper, we take a tall building in Shenzhen, China, whose transfer beams cracked seriously and unusually, as an example. We analyse the cracking reasons through field inspection, investigate various reasons, assess the damage of cracking to the members and the overall structure through ANSYS FEM simulation and PKPM structural calculation, and put forward solutions by identifying the possible failure modes and referring to domestic and international regulations. The diagnosis and treatment were successful in this project, which offers a useful case study for future reference.
