ABSTRACT

The modernization of our country in the past decade has also lead to changes in structural design requirements. Building design took on a modern approach in which buildings are taller and more complex, and usually with a unique and distinct architectural form. Whilst the new seismic design requirements of these buildings have been evolved in the design codes and standards, new approaches also have been developed in the design control and approval process for building structures violated the prescriptive design requirements. This paper reviews one of the approaches, the Performance-based Seismic Design Approach. It addresses the determination of performance objectives, the identification of critical elements, the design approach of the building structure and the study of elastic and elasto-plastic performances to satisfy the various levels of seismic protection implied in the code. Project examples are included to illustrate the various design requirements for discussion on the principles of the Performance-Based approach.

Keywords: Existing codes, New approaches, Performance-based, Seismic.
